A vintage flanked solitaire sapphire ring, c.1990. This ring is defined by the remarkable sapphire sat at its centre. Weighing over 3.50ct, this natural blue sapphire is a well-proportioned oval mixed-cut and claw set in an open-back mount, which allows light to flood into the stone and bring its colour to life.
What I love the most about this sapphire is its beautifully varied tone. By traditional standards, the most prized sapphires display a perfectly even, saturated hue throughout, but here, that ‘imperfection’ is exactly the appeal. Rather than a flat, uniform blue, it shifts through cornflower, periwinkle and pale sky at the edges, deepening into richer midnight and inky slate at its core.
It appears almost like an ancient Roman mosaic of the sea, small flashes of intense colour that create a sense of depth and movement. As the light moves, so too does the colour, giving the stone a vivid, almost liquid quality that feels both luminous and endlessly engaging.
Claw set in warm 18ct yellow gold which offers a striking contrast to the cool toned sapphire. Flanked on either side by two round brilliant-cut diamonds, four in total with a combined approximate weight of 0.12ct - adding a subtle sparkle that compliments rather than competes.
Unless stated otherwise, gem weights and specifications are estimated (assessed in mount).
