Ellen Sofie Hovland's subtle cosmos

With lyrics on the trials and tribulations that arise when people are attracted to each other, singer-songwriter Ellen Sofie Hovland makes her debut with a CD on the KKV label this autumn. She is one of the very few debutants in the Norwegian record industry this year.

The album she has created presents her own voice and guitar accompaniment in a subtle audio cosmos created by Morten Qvenild (miscellaneous keyboards) and Tanja Orning (cello). Erik Hillestad, the producer, has shied away from putting her in the stereotypical folk song/pop category with drums and bass, rather allowing Ellen Sofie to reach out to us with her personal strengths and vulnerability.

Ellen Sofie's lyrics and melodies are of the rare kind that both give and demand:

They give laughter, sweetness and a knockout blow or two.

They demand a creative, open attitude from the listener.

She leaves many rooms open, both in her lyrics and in the listening experience, and in this way the listener becomes a co-creator in her world.

Her observations are sharp as a sword. And she wields the edge elegantly, surprisingly, just like a samurai. What are they about?  About men who know how to use their power, and women who speculate in letting them use it. About life on Facebook, about desire beyond reason, how incredible it is to be loved, and what actually happened to idealism?
