The Hioki CT7731, CT7736, and CT7742 are AC/DC Auto-Zero Current Sensors built around a Hioki PL14 output connector, which lets each sensor be automatically recognized when connected to a compatible instrument for simple setup. The design reduces zero-point variability caused by temperature, making the sensors well suited to applications characterized by temperature variations, such as continuous measurement spanning daytime and nighttime hours.

A clamp-on current sensor measures the current flowing in a conductor by closing its jaw around a single wire, without breaking the circuit. These sensors support a multiple-winding technique for low current levels: passing the conductor through the jaw multiple times increases relative sensitivity, where ten windings multiply the measured current by a factor of ten. When this technique is used, the windings should be made radially with a diameter of at least 20 cm. The most accurate measurement is obtained when the conductor is clamped in the center of the jaw.

Compare Other Models in This Series

The CT7731, CT7736, and CT7742 form a family of AC/DC Auto-Zero Current Sensors that share a common architecture: a Hioki PL14 output connector for automatic instrument recognition, a DC to 5 kHz (−3 dB) frequency band, a 36.5 kHz sampling frequency, and an auto-zero design that limits temperature-induced zero-point drift. The three models differ primarily in rated measurement current and the size of conductor each jaw can accommodate.

All three carry a 3-year product warranty and a 3-year guaranteed accuracy period, and all are rated for operation from −25°C to 65°C at 80% RH or less. The choice between them is driven by the current to be measured, the conductor diameter, and the maximum rated voltage to earth appropriate to the circuit.

Each model below links to its own dedicated product page with new-condition pricing. Select the CT7731, CT7736, or CT7742 that matches your rated current and conductor-diameter requirements, and review that model's individual specifications before ordering.

The CT7731 is the 100 A AC/DC member of the family, with a 1 mV/A output rate and a 150 A peak rating. It accepts conductors up to φ33 mm, is rated to 600 V AC/DC (Measurement Category IV), and is the smallest and lightest of the three at approximately 58 × 132 × 18 mm and 250 g. Its offset drift between −25°C and 65°C is within ±0.5% f.s.

Rated measurement current steps from 100 A AC/DC on the CT7731 to 600 A AC/DC on the CT7736 and 2000 A AC/DC on the CT7742, with corresponding peak ratings of 150 A, 900 A, and 2840 A. Output rate is 1 mV/A on the CT7731 and CT7736 and 0.1 mV/A on the CT7742. The CT7731 and CT7736 accept conductors up to φ33 mm, while the CT7742's larger jaw accepts up to φ55 mm.

Maximum rated voltage to earth is 600 V AC/DC (Category IV) on the CT7731, 1000 V AC/DC (Category III) on the CT7736, and 600 V AC/DC (Category IV) on the CT7742. Offset drift is within ±0.5% f.s. on the CT7731 and within ±0.1% f.s. on the CT7736 and CT7742, and the effect of an external magnetic field (400 A/m, DC) tightens from ±1.5% f.s. on the CT7731 to ±0.5% f.s. on the CT7736 and ±0.2% f.s. on the CT7742. Mass increases across the family, from approximately 250 g on the CT7731 to 320 g on the CT7736 and 510 g on the CT7742. The comparison table below summarizes these per-model differences.

Model Rated Current Max Voltage to Earth Conductor Diameter
CT7742 2000 A AC/DC 600 V AC/DC (Measurement category IV) φ55 mm (φ2.17″) or less
CT7731 100 A AC/DC 600 V AC/DC (Measurement category IV) φ33 mm (φ1.30″) or less
CT7736 600 A AC/DC 1000 V AC/DC (Measurement category III) φ33 mm (φ1.30″) or less

Important: Attach the clamp around only one conductor; clamping single-phase (2-wire) or three-phase (3-wire) conductors together will prevent the device from making a measurement.
Important: This current sensor is an output device that must be connected to a compatible Hioki instrument via its PL14 output connector; it does not display readings on its own.
Important: Peak input measurement is only available in conjunction with the CM7290 Display Unit. For combination accuracy with the instrument, see the instrument's instruction manual.
Important: Initial zero-adjustment must be performed under no-input conditions before use; once performed, zero-point movement stays within the guaranteed range.
Important: Risk of electric shock from the conductor being measured increases when wet (Grip IP54 rating on CT7736/CT7742 applies only when measuring an insulated conductor).
Important: Be sure to also read the separate booklet "Current Sensor Operating Precautions" before use.
Recommended pairing: use the CM7290 Display Unit, which is required to enable peak input measurement with these sensors.
