Color in this fabric is not applied after weaving — it is built into the thread itself. Both warp and weft are variegated-dyed silk, each carrying multiple tones within a single strand. The weft shifts in shorter intervals — pink into peach into mauve — creating frequent, close-set color transitions across the width. The warp moves in longer bands — amber deepening into rose, rose lifting into blush — so the color travels down the fabric length in slow, deliberate waves. Where the two axes meet, the tones negotiate. No two metres resolve the same way.
The weave alternates between two distinct blocks: dense herringbone-chevron sections built entirely in metallic gold zari, and open ground sections where the variegated silk weft surfaces without zari interruption. This block structure gives the fabric a rhythm — gold geometry and open color, repeating across the width. In direct light, the zari chevrons read as bold and architectural. In diffused light, the ground blocks come forward and the fabric turns painterly.
At 44 inches wide, it cuts generously. The block structure rewards considered cutting — draped blouses, lehenga panels, and statement jackets where the alternating zari and ground sections can be positioned deliberately. Because both warp and weft carry variegated color, the fabric reads differently depending on grain and drape direction. A textile that repays the attention of a designer who knows how to use it.
