A belemnite was a squid-like marine creature that lived during the Mesozoic Era, roughly 200 to 66 million years ago. Like their modern cephalopod relatives, they had tentacles and could squirt ink, but they also had a hard internal skeleton — the bullet-shaped "guard" — which is what most commonly survives as a fossil. These guards are often found in opal form in Australian fossil beds, making them prized collector's pieces. Belemnites went extinct at the same time as the non-avian dinosaurs, at the end of the Cretaceous period.
