Description

The FNIRS Pioneer kit provides all the necessary equipment to conduct signal acquisitions using the biosignalsplux FNIRS sensor (functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy) and comes with a 4-channel biosignalsplux hub, the FNIRS sensor, a hub charger, and a PLUX-proven Bluetooth dongle.

The FNIRS is an easy-to-use, non-invasive, and portable sensor which uses two emitting LEDs, one in the red region and the other in the infrared region of the spectrum, to measure the red and infrared light reflectance in the cortical tissue.

The emitted light of each one of these LEDs is absorbed by a photodiode, which resulting current can be used to compute an estimation of the blood oxygen saturation level in the monitored brain region or tissue. This method, combined with the sensor’s form-factor, provides a non-intrusive method for brain activity monitoring, which is applicable in a variety of research fields, including biomedical, psychophysiology, and other functional neuroimaging applications (e.g. Brain-Computer Interface development). Additionally, the acquired sensor data can be used to extract heart rate information, which can be used for further analysis of cardiac activity (e.g. Heart Rate Variability).

Developed for Developers & Researchers
Other than most biosignalsplux sensors, which provide a pre-conditioned analog output, this sensor provides a digital output signal which can be received via SPI. Although it has been designed for signal acquisitions conducted on the forehead, the light intensity of each electrode can be set individually using the biosignalsplux API. This allows one to adjust the light intensities when using this sensor on other regions or research applications with different requirements.

Developed in Cooperation with Charles River Analytics
For the development of this sensor, PLUX has joined Charles River Analytics (CRA) to provide a new affordable miniaturized FNIRS sensor which allows acquisitions of high-quality brain activity data even in settings with heavy physical movement involved – all while keeping the cost of the sensor at a fraction of currently available FNIRS systems.

Together with research partners at CRA and the McLean Hospital (Harvard Medical school), the development and out-of-the-lab results of this sensors have been thoroughly investigated. Those results are presented in the research team’s paper “A System to Monitor, Extract, and Decode Indicators of Cognitive Workload (MEDIC) in Realistic, High-motion Environments”.
