Edward Elton [1569-1624]. A rather red-hot puritan who caused such a stir where he preached in Barmondsey near London that upon his death his works were burned publicly. He had no room for innovation, for man-made worship, for any hint of justification by works and deviation from the Gospel of grace.

Very scarce; only 5 locations [British Library, Oxford, Lambeth, Birmingham, and Cambridge]. 

Original calf over bound with more recent; perhaps 18th century. No blank ffep. Title is tatty as shown, but complete. The remainder of the text quite good generally with two leaves having ink stains, some general handling, one signature forward in the binding and shaken. Very minor damp stains at extremities toward rear of block. Extensive 17th century history of the Ludlow family on the leaf succeeding the text. Title and final leaf reinforce with no text obscured. Rear pastedown has old recipes for Rhumatism, Consumption, etc.
