The mountains and the valleys of Wyoming are just as gorgeous in real life as I’ve depicted them here with picture-postcard accuracy and a painter’s patience. But the young Shoshone woman who appears upside-down in the sky is fictional. Her presence is intentionally confusing, meant to serve as a juxtaposition of the Native American spiritual world with the Western American postcard scenery. I intend no social commentary here—just two worlds trying to coexist.
