A Belle Époque sapphire cluster ring, circa 1900s. Set to centre with an oval cushion-cut natural sapphire set in elegantly curving claws in an open back setting which invites light to pool in and glow from within. The sapphire is a gorgeous midnight-blue colour and its surface is near-flawless despite its age. The sapphire comes alive in the light with shifting tones of cornflower, cobalt and deep indigo blue - it feels like looking into a Mediterranean lagoon.
Forming an elegant coronet cluster design, its surrounded by eight old mine cut diamonds, each hand-cut and painstakingly matched for colour and brilliance. They are set in platinum claws, further enhancing their bright scintillation, the approximate diamond weight is 0.40 carats. An intricately pierced gallery and slightly inwardly tapering shoulders that lead to a solid 18ct gold D-shape shank. As typical of early 20th century jewellery, the ring is conforming and sits low in profile, making it the perfect ring to be worn and adored everyday.
The exterior bears an indistinct French hallmark, attesting to its origin in Belle Époque France, while the interior is stamped with its historical inventory number ‘5770’ and tenderly inscribed ‘Louis’. Gracefully proportioned and refined, this is an exquisite example of Belle Époque craftsmanship at its most elegant.
Unless stated otherwise, gem weights and specifications are estimated (assessed in mount).
